Remember the KittyWu x PRAISE t-shirts? The 6-track sampler of KittyWu artists including Amateur Takes Control and I Am David Sparkle is now a free download. Great way to introduce your friends to local post-rock! Short of just bringing them to a show, you know.

Dear friend,
I believe in letting go. The things in life that you may hold dear to your heart can never truly belong to you alone. The journey of living is but an essential wanderlust towards discovery and fulfilment — of dreams.
Hence, I am letting go and sharing my dreams with you. I would like to invite you into my world — and maybe myself into yours.
The compilation of songs from my debut EP are available free for you here. I hope you will take them with you on your journey. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,Seyra

Seyra’s excellent self-titled EP is now free to download. If you can spare the SGD$8 I highly suggest grabbing a physical copy though!

    Furniture - False Start

The greatest Malaysian export since the Ramly burger, Furniture have been called “shoegaze with a punch”. While their debut album Twilight Chases the Sun (2005) had a huge post-rock vibe, the upcoming release is supposed to feature more singing from frontman Ronnie.

False Start is actually a pretty old piece, but it fits right in with the vocal-centric concept. Ron’s voice isn’t the most fantastic, to be honest, but he belts out his lines with such earnestness that you can’t help but bop along. They’ve also managed to squeeze massive sounds out of a multitude of instruments, as usual — from screaming synths to trashy guitar to trumpets and even a layer of vocals at the end.

I don’t even know what to label this, but it reminds me of some of the louder baroque pop pieces by Broken Social Scene. Just give it a shot, I suppose. You might be pleasantly surprised by this audio post.

Since we appear to be straying into Super Nintendo territory, I thought I’d share an old favourite. Presenting Weezer - The 8-bit album:
Do you remember that dream you had, where the sound chips from the beloved games consoles of your youth all got together and formed a Weezer tribute band? Yeah? No? OK. That dream is about to come true whether you had it or not.The songs on this compilation have mostly been created using original videogame hardware running home-brew software, and vary radically in style, from minimal ‘one man and his Game Boy’ compositions to 8-bit inspired full band performances. Pterodactyl Squad proudly presents the music of Weezer as you have never heard it before.
It’s a free download via Pterodactyl Squad and features the previously mentioned I Fight Dragons, my personal 8-bit heroes Anamanaguchi, and a busload of other assorted nerds disguised as rock stars. The alternate album cover you see here is courtesy of Shaun Inman.

The Fall of Math by 65daysofstatic

My early forays into post-rock left me sorely wanting. I couldn’t find anything that resembled the young, energetic instrumentalists I saw in a small art space who were technically on par with the prog I was so familiar with but termed themselves post. Everywhere I looked were the same crescendos, over and over (and under and over and over again).

So I was overjoyed to discover 65dos and their unique blend of glitchy, IDM beats with precise, math-rock drumming; heavy guitars with the gentlest piano riffs. It’s hard to imagine how that sounds, but it wouldn’t be wrong to call them industrial post-rock. The English quartet are also notable for their live shows — it’s no small feat to play with programmed beats, and they’ve shared the stage with acts as varied as Metallica, Deftones, and The Cure. And I’m gonna be catching them in exactly 28 days :D

Listen to: Retreat! Retreat!, oddly named for it sounds pretty victorious to me. It’s also probably their most well known track [YouTube]

Looks like I’m the last to post. I play the keyboard for prog metal bands and I have mini Death Cab jams in my room with my guitar. I like how the foam lasts just long enough on a 16oz chai latte. The last dream I remember having is from when I was eight. I once wore out the soles of my chucks until my heels met the ground when I walked. I think Singaporean bands are ready to take over the world — just not the ones you’ve heard on national TV. I may be paranoid, but not an android.
